‘02 Montero with a supposedly bad CV joint/shaft, but I think it sounds like the diff. This is what the drain plug revealed?

If this is 182,000 miles of OEM oil fill, i’d say that looks great! It’s not uncommon to see shavings and metal fragments in differential oil. I’d start being concerned at fingernail size pieces or 3-dimensional chunks which would indicate some serious wear or a broken ring/pinion.

Looks like moly.

And what would that eventuality say to you?

with IFS? hard to say. with a solid axle I would suspect the inner axle seals are going or gone.

Naw, it just looks like an absurd concentration of metal fragments in that oil.

Unless it’s been changed regularly (yeah right) that looks like acceptable wear. You should see what came out of the axle of my crown vic when I drained it to do axle bearings/seals. It was like a shiny black metal-flake soup.
